King Kool Kat Wins 2011 Hyperion Stakes At Belmont

June 27th, 2011

Seven-year-old gelding King Kool Kat has won the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes at Belmont Racecourse on Saturday June 25, 2011.

The talented galloper posted his first win of the preparation in the $125,000 Hyperion Stakes, after finishing in the placing on all three of his past starts.

After the almost one length win in the 2011 Hyperion Stakes, King Kool Kat’s trainer, Ian Glading, feels the horse will be a worthy spring carnival contender in Melbourne.

“I’ve arranged to meet with his syndicate of owners and discuss a Melbourne trip,” Glading said.

“He’s good enough to win over there and we could select races in which he’ll dodge the likes of Black Caviar.”

King Kool Kat recovered well from his impressive win over second place-finisher Impressive Jeuney and race favourite and third place-getter Grand Nirvana.

Glading will now take King Kool Kat to the Group 3 Strickland Stakes at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday July 9, 2011.

“The horse has pulled up good as gold from the Hyperion and it’s now all systems go for his Strickland Stakes start,” Glading said.

“Our original plan was to follow the Strickland Stakes with a trip to the Kalgoorlie Carnival in September.

“He won the Hannan’s Handicap there in top style last year.”

However, Glading is considering heading to Melbourne due to his belief that King Kool Kat would be weighted out of the Kalgoorlie Carnival’s horse racing fields.

“But the Hyperion win boosted his stakes to $660,000 and I reckon he’d get a big weight in this year’s Hannan’s,” he said.

“That’s why I’m thinking about Melbourne.”

The prospect of a spring campaign for King Kool Kat is a far cry from his humble beginnings.

“The horse has come a long way since I bought him for $9000 as a yearling,” Glading said.

“A group of prospective owners invited me to meet them at a casino restaurant and discuss a purchase at the 2005 Perth yearling sale.

“They had a $10,000 limit and I wrote each of the proposed syndicate’s names on a serviette. But the syndicate pulled out of our deal after I bought the horse.”

“Established clients from my stable stepped in and paid for him.

“They’re having a great time these days. I still use the serviette, with the unlucky syndicate’s names, as a telephone book marker.”
