Seven-year-old Perth favourite Marasco proved he still has black type wins in him when he claimed a first-up win in the $150, 000 Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1400m) at Ascot racecourse on Saturday.
Old Perth favourite Marasco proved he still has Group wins in him
The Fred Kersley-trained Marasco ($3.70) defeated the close $3.60 favourite and last year’s winner Tarzi by a widening two lengths with Spitfire Ace ($4.80) a further three quarters of a length away in third.
Daniel Staeck’s Spitfire Ace led early on but Marasco was able to catch up to the speedy pacemaker, overtaking him in the closing stages of the race.
Spitfire Ace then faded back to third as Tarzi, coming from well back in the field, made their move on the outside to move up to second.
It was a brilliant return to winning form for the local champion who had been out of the scene recently to undergo knee-chip removal surgery.
Son of Scenic, Marasco has now won 15 of his 36 career starts for prizemoney exceeding $1.6million.
