Taking place in March annually, the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes is the headline race of the day and is a 1600m sprint event run under weight-for-age conditions.

With prizemoney set at over $125,000 the Hyperion Stakes always attracts a quality field of competitive sprinters.

There are a number of earlier weight-for-age events at the Perth Carnival that act as a good lead-up for horses set to contest the Hyperion Stakes.

Hyperion Stakes’ runners will often come via races including the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) in October, the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) in November and the Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m) in December.

A good follow up race for horses coming off a run in the Hyperion Stakes is the Group 3 Strickland Stakes (1800m) held two weeks later at the same course.

History

First run in 1972 when St. Just claimed victory, the Hyperion Stakes began as a Principal race run over five furlongs.

The following year in 1973 the race distance was converted to 1000m. In 1974 it was run over 1200m then from 1975 – 1978 the length was increased to 1400m.

For one year in 1979 the Hyperion Stakes was conducted over 1450m before reverting back to 1400m. In 1983 it was held over 1500m for one year.

The Hyperion Stakes gained its Group 3 status in 1980.

Hyperion Stakes Betting

Hyperion Stakes betting is a major must-do for most people who get on down to the tracks for the event. It’s a highly exciting thing to get involved in, and for lucky punters there is always the chance of turning a decent profit from a well-placed bet.

Some of the most important things to consider when making your Hyperion Stakes betting selections is the distance each horse is most comfortable with. Often, it would be a good idea to bet on a mile specialist, but many past instances of the Hyperion Stakes have been won by stayers.
